“I think the heart of any musician’s—or any organization’s—personality lies in his programming. Not just what music you choose to perform, but how you put the concerts together. Every music director is given this curatorial gift. To me, concerts that uncover intuitive, subtle links (and even rifts) have the most impact.
This Cantata Singers season, my 30th with the organization, reflects the possibility of that impact. Yes, the impact these musicians and this audience have on me, but more, the effect the adventurous programming that has always been at the heart of Cantata Singers’ life can have on all of us. Each of our concerts this season explores this rich and unexpected interplay of ancient (familiar and unfamiliar) and contemporary (familiar and unfamiliar) voices. From Bach and Zelenka to Martin and Merryman, there are only vital voices here, and I think all of their lives bloom in the fertile company they keep.”
—David Hoose, Music Director
Join us for a season celebrating David Hoose’s thirtieth anniversary as Music Director of Cantata Singers. The Adventure embodies Hoose’s signature programmatic approach—bold, refined, and unexpectedly revealing. Hear iconic works by Bach and Bruckner paired with enthralling, lesser-known works by Jan Dismas Zelenka and Boston premieres by Marjorie Merryman and James MacMillan. Find out why Boston Phoenix critic Lloyd Schwartz is “deeply impressed.”
