Classroom Cantatas
A cantata? What’s a cantata? The 3rd , 4th and 5th graders at Beethoven Elementary School know! “A cantata is a big song made up of little songs and group of people sing it.” “A cantata is a group of people that make a big sound.” |

In 12-session residencies, children work with teaching artists and classroom teachers to compose and perform the words and music of original cantatas. Working with a relevant story or theme, the students explore language of rhythm and melody, giving shape to their individual voices. They also perform their pieces, learning the skills, discipline and joys of singing, rehearsing and performing.
Classroom Cantatas has been in the urban schools since 1992.
Cantata Singers also offers free or significantly reduced concert tickets to all participating teachers and students. It's heartening to see increasing numbers of students and their families taking advantage of the ticket offer — and, more importantly, developing a life-long love of music.

This inspiring educational program brings out the best in students and visibly demonstrates, in both the students' performance and their written cantata, what they are capable of accomplishing.
“I learned you have to respect others and cooperate.”
“I learned if you work together, it goes faster.”
